First full week

Last Sunday we went to church then onto breakfast with the 'breakfast club'. It was nice seeing all of the group again and catching up with all of the news.

After breakfast we came back home and I went to work at the nursery. I fell into the work as if I had never left. When I was away, I couldn't remember the names of the plants, but when I got back to work, the names just seemed to pop into my head. The weeds aren't as bad as I had expected, but there is still a ton of them. When you get all of the weeds out of the pots, the plants look good. Some are still dormant and it is hard to tell which plants are still alive and which aren't.
Mike and I worked Monday, Wednesday and Thursday. We both feel that we got a lot accomplished and things are looking better. We will start preparing for the Master Gardeners Spring Fling show in a week or two.

Sunday, after work we went over to my nephew's home for a very nice dinner. They just bought a new home pretty close to here. It is a new home and much larger than their last house. We taught them how to play Mexican Train.

Yesterday, I went to Nativity Church to help prepare 104 Boston Butts for cooking on two giant BBQ pits for a dinner and resale. One of the parishioners was on a BBQ team here in Memphis, and he has become the "grill master"of the parish. We first 'rub the butts' with yellow mustard the rub them again with a dry rub that he makes up. They are then left to sit and marinate for 3-4 hrs. They are then put in the pits and cooked for 14-18 hours. This is done as a fund raiser for the church.

This time of year the weather can be unpredictable, as you might understand. A front came through last evening as we were preparing to put the meat on the grill. It turned off really cold with 20 mph winds and rain. The pits are on trailers out in the open so you can imagine how hard it is to keep the temperature in the pits where it needs to be.

Brenda and I went home about 9:30, the other guys were staying with it all night. These are dedicated men who do this several times a year. These guys all came from another parish, and are still associated with it. They do one dinner and sale for them, too.

We are probably going back to the church in a little bit. It is very cold here today. The high is expected to be in the high 30's today with pretty high winds. I keep asking myself, why did I leave the warm temps of Texas this early.

We've arrived

We left Timber Ridge about 10:30 am on Monday after saying goodbye to some of the guests there. The trip to highway 59 was pretty uneventful until about 3/4 of the way down 242 we encountered a very large dead dog in the middle of our lane. There was no way to avert hitting it again. I was hoping to go over it without touching it, but that was not the case. It hit the bottom of the coach so I knew it would hit the car. I don't know how it got under the car without tearing something up underneath.
We stopped at Flying J for fuel and propane and I looked under the coach and car and saw no damage to either vehicle. I don't know how that happened, but we are thankful.

We then headed off to Livingston. When we arrived we found that some people that we met in New Mexico in November 2007, were at the Rainbows End park. We had an enjoyable reunion, They are very nice people and hope to see them on the road again.

We then headed for Arkadelphia, AR. The park has been improved even more than when we were there last year. It still isn't a destination park and probably never will be.
We spent the morning in Hot Springs looking at a very historic town.
Both of us have such super memories. We both forgot the camera, so no pictures.

We received an e-mail from Mike. Nancy's appt. had been changed to Friday, so it was decided that we would go on to Memphis on Thursday. We had not made reservations @ Tom Sawyer park, so we just went on by.
We arrived about 1pm and got set up in our old spot.
Nancy was working on a quilt, it is going to be beautiful, she is so very talented.
She looks really good. I hope her visit with the doctor will be fruitful.

I start work on Sunday, and look forward to the challenge.
While we were gone, Mike and Alan rearranged the work building. It appears to be more functional now. Things are laid out in such a way, that it will be more convenient, a much better use of space. We will see as time progresses.

Getting ready for the road

This is our last day to work for Timber Ridge this winter, as we are heading for Memphis on Monday.
Gwen and Billy took us to lunch yesterday. Great conversation and good Mexican food. They are such lovely people and we will enjoy returning in the fall.
I normally make the walk around the park in less than 10 minutes, but yesterday, it took 1 1/2 hours to walk as I got stopped by several of our residents to talk. It was great and we will miss a lot of these people.

As I was about 3/4ths around the park, Ted drove up and asked if I could go and help him pick up his truck. The water pump had gone out and he had left it at the Ford dealer in Conroe. They have been on a Caribbean cruise, and returned Thursday. I took Donna's car home and stopped in to welcome her home.

Wednesday evening, we went to Val & Tony's house for dinner. We had been given frozen domestic pheasant by one of the residents of the park, and we had decided to share them with our family. Chris and Linda came over, too. Michelle and the girls are staying there as the are remodelling the kitchen in their home. They are doing it themselves and are doing a great job. I think it will look very nice when it is completed.

We have a busy weekend planned. We were planning to go the Texas Opry tonight, but it was sold out. So Ted, Donna, Brenda and I are going to Sweet Tomatoes for dinner tonight.
We got together with them and Jay and Stella @ Rayford Crossing last evening for bingo. Ted and Donna both won. We had a great time talking and left about 10:45pm.

We are going to church with Val & Tony on Sunday then to breakfast with them and Chris & Linda. We will spend our last Sunday morning here with them. We are then to meet with Ted & Donna to go to the RV show @ Reliant Center. As we are employees of Timber Ridge, on temporary hiatus, we can get in free. Ted and Donna get in free, too.
Jay & Stella are going today with some of the 'Boomer Friends', so they won't be joining us on Sunday.

We are taking our time going to Memphis. We will go as far as Livingston on Monday, On to Hot Springs, AR on Tuesday and Wednesday, then onto Tom Sawyer park on Thursday, to arrive at Mike and Nancy's house on Friday morning. Five days to go 650 miles, that is really pushing ourselves.

Another evening with more old friends

As we wind down our time here, we have had time to reflect on how lucky we are to have great friends and family. We have a multitude of friends from our previous life, and we are making new friends in our present lifestyle (fulltime RVing).
It is also nice that my siblings and I are friends and as close as we are.

We were invited Tuesday night to a get together with some of my old coworkers from the hospital.
We all met at Jeri's home where we had snacks, dessert and coffee. There was good conversation and we thoroughly enjoyed each others company. Sandy, Liz and I worked together for over 15 years. Most of the spouses were there so it made for an interesting evening as I wasn't the only male there.

As stated before, our time here winds down. We are leaving on a leisurely trip for Memphis in less than 2 weeks . I am going to help my brother with his nursery business again this year.
We are scheduled to participate in 3 local nursery shows. I thoroughly enjoy those shows although I'm the "grunt guy". I can and will talk to most anyone, but I don't know enough about these grasses to try to sell them. I am learning, though.

We also are looking forward to seeing Brenda's family. Since we are both retired, it has become easier to visit them much more often than when we were working and living in our brick & stick house.

We are eagerly anticipating returning to Nativity parish for church on Sundays. The people are so friendly and welcoming. We enjoy the "Breakfast Club" on Sunday mornings after church.

The owners of the RV park that we have been managing have asked us to come back next fall to manage the park for them. Brenda wants to come back so we told them that we would return in October or November. It has been an interesting experience. Maybe next year there will be more to do to keep me busy.
